The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program (commonly known as Section 8) is the federal government’s primary program for helping very low-income families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.
Under this program, rental assistance is provided on behalf of the household, allowing participants to choose their own housing. Eligible units may include single-family homes, townhouses, or apartments and are not limited to subsidized housing developments.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is administered locally by the Englewood Housing Authority (EHA) and funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Families who receive a housing voucher are responsible for locating a suitable rental unit where the property owner agrees to participate in the program. The unit may include the family’s current residence. All rental units must meet HUD’s minimum health and safety standards, as determined through inspection by EHA.
Once approved, EHA pays a housing subsidy directly to the landlord on behalf of the participating household. The family is responsible for paying the difference between the total rent and the subsidy amount. Generally, participants pay approximately 30 percent of 11 their adjusted gross income toward rent, with the remaining balance covered through Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) made by the Englewood Housing Authority.
The Englewood Housing Authority administers 876 Housing Choice Vouchers.
